Workshop on Disaster Emergency Management of the Istanbul Process on Afghanistan Held in Beijing

On September 19, 2017, the Workshop on Disaster Emergency Management of the Istanbul Process on Afghanistan hosted by National Disaster Reduction Center of China, Ministry of Civil Affairs of China commenced in Beijing. Delegates from Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, India and China attended the workshop. Mr. Yin Benjie, Deputy Director-General of Disaster Relief Department and Secretary of the CPC Committee of National Disaster Reduction Center of China, Ministry of Civil Affairs of China, Mr. Deng Xijun, Special Envoy on Afghan Affairs of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, Mr. Ezattullah Sediqi, Advisor to the State Minister of Disaster Management and Humanitarian Affairs of Afghanistan, and Mr. Yasir Hussain, Director (Afghanistan) of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan attended and addressed the opening ceremony.
Mr. Yin Benjie pointed out that Chinese government has attached great importance to the communication and cooperation with countries in the Istanbul Process region in the field of disaster prevention and reduction while enhancing its ability of disaster prevention and reduction. It is committed to building the communication and dialogue platform, strengthen the resource sharing and improve the integrated capacity of disaster reduction in each country. Mr. Deng Xijun emphasized in the opening address that many countries in the Heart of Asia are severely affected by natural disasters such as earthquake and typhoon, and it is of common needs to further strengthen regional cooperation in disaster prevention and relief to cope with natural disasters, which should continue to be the priority area for the deepening regional cooperation of confidence building measures.
During the three-day workshop, the delegates will communicate and share views on the institutional building of government-led social engagement in disaster relief in China, participation of civil society organization in community-based disaster risk reduction in Asian countries and international cooperation on disaster management under the Istanbul Process on Afghanistan, also they will visit the China National Training Base for Urban Search and Rescue.
This workshop aims to promote mutual understanding and positive dialogue between China and member countries of Istanbul Process such as Afghanistan in disaster emergency management, to jointly explore and share national experiences and challenges in leading and coordinating multiple stakeholders in disaster reduction and relief, and to promote the establishment and improvement of disaster reduction and relief institutions in these countries so as to enhance regional capacity of disaster reduction, relief and governance.
